Ambrose Bierce's collection of short stories of the supernatural and the macabre Can Such Things Be was first published in 1893. One of it's most frightening tales, "The Damned Thing", tells of the horrifying slaughter of a man by a supernatural and invisible "Thing"!

The Damned Thing (Audible Audio Edition) Ambrose Bierce Roy Macready Spiders' House Audio Books

Anything Ambrose Bierce writes is at least entertaining. He attempts to craft some horror, but the true value of his writing is the wit and humor, of which there is precious little from his contemporaries. One of my favorite exchanges is from this story, in which a young man is being questioned by a coroner:
"You were with him when he died?"
"Near him."
"How did that happen--your presence, I mean?"
"I was visiting him at this place to shoot and fish. A part of my purpose, however, was to study him, and his odd, solitary way of life. He seemed a good model for a character in fiction. I sometimes write stories."
"I sometimes read them."
"Thank you."
"Stories in general--not yours."

This gallows humor is classic Bierce.

The Damned Thing (Audible Audio Edition) Ambrose Bierce Roy Macready Spiders' House Audio Books Reviews

Great short story. So realistic and it is surprising that such a science-fiction story was written during this time period.
Vintage Ambrose Bierce. He was one of a kind and always knew what he was writing about. Devil take the hindmost.
I like Ambrose Bierce and his work is fun to read. Thanks for your outstanding service and support. Love your company. EA
Not his best story. Interesting since it is science fiction written in the 1800's. Very short takes only a few minutes to read.
I really would have liked to hear more....Good description and humor throughout...this is my first Bierce story, looking forward to more..4 out of 5 stars.

A very, very short-story. Two hunters are attacked by an unseen force and one ends up dead. The short-story covers the inquest into the death.

There really wasn't much to this story. But, I am sure at the time it was written, in 1893 the line of thinking was very advanced.

3 STARS
Bierce wrote this horror tale in 1893, and was accused of lifting the idea from Fitz James O'Brien's "What Was It?", solely on the lone similar quality of the beast, invisibility. A few years later Guy de Maupassant would use this same idea in his "The Horla", which is my favorite of the three stories. Anyway, this Bierce story is a worthy read, and it's free. My only complaint about this edition is that it drops the chapter titles altogether, the first of which was titled "One Does Not Always Eat What Is on the Table".

(To clarify, and since seems to mix all the reviews of various editions of a work into multiple listings, I am reviewing the free version, ASIN B004TS95N2)
